The Child at Heart in You

Do you remember what it was like to be a child? To believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? To fall asleep without a care in the world and slip off into a magical land of dreams?
It seems to me that most people tend to forget these things. They forgot what it was like to run around chasing fireflies on long summer nights, that mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies are the best remedy for a bad day at school, and what it was like to go to your first Tennessee football game with dad. They lose that wonder about life, that crazy love for new adventure.
As Christians we tend to do the same thing with our faith. We lose that child-like way of thinking when it comes to God. Who has more faith than a child? No one. That’s all they have. That’s all they know. They find something they love/believe in and they cling on to it for dear life. They put everything they have into it. Growing up I loved playing soccer. I could NEVER get enough! So I would practice almost every day, I bought every movie/book there was about soccer (“Switching Goals” was my personal favorite), and I dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. I was even one of the top players on my team for a few years. But what happened? I got older and the game got harder. All of a sudden there were bigger and better girls than me. I couldn’t really keep up. So I simply gave up on my childish dream. We do the same thing with our faith. We start out as “child-like” believers and have a dream. But after a little while things start to get harder. Temptations come into play. We make mistakes sometimes. And then we “grow up” and give up on our dreams. We lose that faith.
If you noticed the verse in the header of this blog it’s Matthew 18:2-4. It’s one of my favorite verses because
Jesus lays it out plain and simple:
“3 This is the truth: unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 In that kingdom, the most humble who are most like this child are the greatest.”
That’s it. Right there! Jesus says that some of the best believers are children so to become like one. We need to restore our child-like faith and believe in the wonder of our Father again! We need to remember what it was like to believe in something with all of our hearts and put all our energy into it! God yearns for all of His children to have faith in Him! He’s waiting for you to rediscover the Child at Heart in you.
